I dug a trench along the back of the yard for the retaining wall today. As you can see, it's about 3/4-Bunsen-deep to accommodate four to six inches of base aggregate and a row of blocks below grade. Bunsen also helped, not by digging, but by eating dirt at the bottom of the trench.
