We rented a plate compactor from Home Depot this morning to run over the gravel base. The compactor was really easy to use and, unlike ones I'd seen online, had wheels for easy transport (I still probably couldn't have gotten it in and out of the car without Ryan). As it turns out, the rock doesn't compact down that much, so we had to dig a lot out and level the base more, then re-compact. I know I'll have to adjust and level with each wall stone on the first level, but the base is pretty solid and ready for the wall.
