Today was one of the first mornings in a long time where the temperature was bearable past 8:00. I'd raked the weeds out of the side of the backyard near the house last night, so I started the day by digging and leveling the soil to be even with the grass. This little section yielded three wheelbarrows full of dirt!
Since it's trash day and I had run out of space for all the weeds in that area, I moved on to digging out where the retaining wall will be at the back of the yard, starting on top of the existing concrete pad. We decided not to start the wall behind the pad, since there is another pad behind it that's lower but just as thick. So, the wall will be about two feet out on the main pad, right where the grass ends and a sprinkler marks the corner.
In addition to digging up the soil, I scraped strips of silicone of the concrete, which presumably were there for an old hot tub. I also got a surprise when I found my first treasure from the backyard--a railroad spike.
It's even better than the spare change I earned from the front yard.
