In addition to decorating, I have taken on some Christmas craft projects. One of my coworkers wanted a tinsel tree, but they're too expensive. I took a look at what he wanted and thought, "I could make that." I started by wrapping floral wire around a stake and hot gluing it in place.
Next, I set it in a little tin of cement.
Then, I wrapped the wire in chenille stems (aka PIPE CLEANERS) and the trunk in tinsel garland.
Here's the final result. 
Next time, I would start with a wider base so that the trunk can be wider at the bottom. There isn't enough of a difference between the top and the bottom, and the bottom branches stick out way too much for the trunk size.
