With the leftover marks from the old plastic surround, coupled with bits of thinset, grout and who knows what else, I was afraid that refinishing would be a big undertaking.
Apparently, I thought it was worse than it really was. It didn't have to be ground down to be refinished, just cleaned and scraped. It already looks a lot cleaner.
But, I'd been told by the company owner that the worker (his son) would be there for six hours and would finish it today. He'd be there when I got home to collect the money and might have to return tomorrow to reinstall the drain. Instead, no one was there when I got home and it had only been cleaned. I called him to find out what was done, when he'd be back, and if I could use the shower since obviously it hadn't gotten any new layers of coating. He was confused about why I'd want to use it--even though I'd told his dad it was the only bathroom--and said no. So now I am two days without a shower instead of just one. Argh.
