She's a Brick Hearth
Even though the fireplace hearth was painted previously, we didn't paint over it in hopes that we could restore the brick--or at least fix whatever was bubbling up through the layers of paint. Before we moved in, I started scratching at it to see what was underneath.
Then, I left the patch alone as we worked on other projects. But this week, I started back again, mostly because this is a project in the same room as a television. This is what it looked like after a couple hours here and there with a razor .
Three hours of work this morning and now we've got this.
It feels like the brick was covered with some sort of wax sealant, then painted. I could get most of the paint up, but there are some parts that haven't cleaned up. Bits of ash were left on before the paint, so that's stuck in some places, and the wax and paint melted together right in front of the fireplace so I can't remove that either. My plan is to try paint stripper that's safe for brick. Some Internet research pointed to one particular brand, but Home Depot didn't have it so I just went with what looked best.
